Healthy Horse

Your First Horse

Cooling your Horse      Fitness: see Competitive Trail

1) A Comprehensive Health Schedule.  Trinity adhere's to a health schedule as follows;

a) Worming every 6 weeks administered by Trinity employees with all data including weight and BCS (body condition score recorded in the medical records book.  See worming rotation details at end of this page

b) Cornell Certified Ferrier services every 6-7 weeks

c) Yearly Shots see list below

d) Customized Feed Program.  Just like people horses have different nutritional needs and Trinity provides 11 different feeds to suit your horses needs.  See dramatic results in 30, 60 and 90 days by putting your horse on Buckeye Feeds.  I (personally) did and that's why Trinity Stables is now a dealer of Buckeye.  Discover more information for yourself at www.buckeyenutrition.com or call their Phd's directly to discuss your horses needs and see why corn and molasses are not in their nutritional plan

If your horse will be boarded at  Trinity Stables the following yearly shots are mandatory; 3-in-1, Influenza, Rhino, West Nile, Rabies and Strangles. (Strangles was made mandatory in 2006 and our barn was vaccinated on 3/31 with their Strangles booster on 4/14/06)        In addition to your Negative Coggins please be prepared to have your horse vaccinated with these shots, and their booster, prior to coming on site.

2) Let Your Horse Be a Horse

Secondly, another factor for healthy horses is letting your horse be a horse!  It sounds silly, but it's not as these 3 scenarios can be all too "normal";  First standing around in a dry lot and getting hay 365 days per year, being the traditional picture of a show barn (horse stands in stall, is in indoor arena working or in the show arena only) or thirdly the horse is worked so hard in a lesson program they have no time to just chill are all negative things in our opinion.   Truly Healthy horses need free time, fresh grass, space to run and pals to run around with balanced with some hard work to keep them conditioned.

De-Wormers de-mystified…

Courtesy of Trinity Stables LLCWe all want healthy horses and at Trinity we strive to do everything possible in many different areas to improve the overall health and well being of your horse.  Listed below are descriptions of different chemical classes of equine de-wormers. Each describes how that chemical class affects parasites and which brand names are associated with it.  But here is a much better description than I have verbalized in the past……I’ve seen your eyes glaze over as I talked about the 3 families (ha-ha).

All of the molecules within the same chemical class work in similar ways. Therefore, it is critical that you rotate not only between brand names, but between chemical classes in order to create a truly effective de-worming program for your horse. This is exactly what we’ve always done and this practice will help reduce the chances of developed resistance in parasites, as well as to maximize the best attributes of each chemical compound.

 1) BENZIMIDAZOLES: Kills parasites quickly and offers broad spectrum nematode protection, including large stongyles, small strongyles, ascarids and pinworms.

Brand Names: Anthelcide EQ (oxibendazole), Panacur Powerpac (fenbendazole), Safe-Guard (fenbendazole), Benzelmin (oxfendazole)

2) PYRANTELS: Kill parasites slowly by causing paralysis in a broad spectrum of nematodes, such as large and small strongyles, ascarids and pinworms.

Brand Names: Strongid Paste (pyrantel pamoate), Strongid C (pyrantel tartrate), Strongid C 2X (pyrantel tartrate), Continuex Daily Dewormer (pyrantel tartrate), Rotation 2 (pyrantel pamoate), Equi Aid CW (pyrantel tartrate), Strongyle Wormer (pyrantel tartrate), Manna Pro Foal & Horse Pelleted Wormer (pyrantel tartrate), Nu-Image Guardian (pyrantel tartrate).

3a) MACROCYCLIC LACTONES: Causes paralysis in parasites, including a broad spectrum of nematodes and arthropods. It affects large and small strongyles, benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles, ascarids, pinworms, bots and summer sore-causing parasites.

Brand Names: Equell (ivermectin), Zimecterin (ivermectin), IverCare (ivermectin), Quest Gel (moxidectin), Eqvalan 9 ivermectin), Equimectrin (ivermectin), Rotation 1 (ivermectin), Horse Health Equine Ivermectin (ivermectin), Agri-Mectin Equine Paste (ivermectin)

3b) COMBINED MACROCYCLIC LACTONES: Paralyzes nematodes and arthropods and breaks down the membranes of tapeworms. This class protects against large and small strongyles, benzimidazole-resistant small strongyles, ascarids, pinworms, bots, summer sore-causing parasites and tapeworms.

Brand Names: Equimax (ivermectin/praziquantel), Zimecterin Gold (ivermectin/praziquantel), Quest jPlus (moxidectin/praziquantel), ComboCare (moxidectin/praziquantel).

Trinity Stables rotates between the 3 de-worming families as well as rotates products within those families…..all for the health of our horses!
